Now, the company is betting on cancer drugs to help it regain its footing after a rocky year marked by the rapid decline of its Covid business. That $43 billion Seagen acquisition doubled Pfizer's oncology drug pipeline to 60 different experimental programs. Some analysts noted that it might take a few years for some of Pfizer's cancer drugs in mid-stage development to show pivotal clinical trial data and become less risky. Revenue from the blockbuster breast cancer drug Ibrance and prostate cancer treatment Xtandi, which Pfizer shares with Astellas Pharma, has declined over the past year. They are among the most expensive prescription drugs in the U.S. Before the Seagen deal, 94% of Pfizer's cancer products were small-molecule drugs.

The Endangered Languages of New York
  + stars: | 2024-02-22 | by ( Alex Carp | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +19 min
Most people think of endangered languages as far-flung or exotic, the opposite of cosmopolitan. All told, there are more endangered languages in and around New York City than have ever existed anywhere else, says Perlin, who has spent 11 years trying to document them. She has published children’s books in Wakhi and other endangered languages of the Pamir mountains in Central Asia. By the start of the pandemic, the city had begun official outreach in nine Indigenous languages and recorded videos in several other endangered languages. We cross-referenced E.L.A.’s New York City language list with three independent databases that track the threat level of languages around the world: Ethnologue, which catalogs all known living languages in the world; UNESCO’s World Atlas of Languages, a survey of all the languages spoken in UNESCO member states; and the Endangered Languages Project, a site to which the public can contribute content, managed by the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and the Endangered Languages Catalogue (ELCat) project at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient in Novo's type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic. A rising tide for Eli Lilly? Though the study was specifically about Wegovy, Wall Street sees a positive readthrough for similar medications from other providers, particularly Eli Lilly 's Zepbound. Similarly, UBS analyst Trung Huynh called the weekend data a "best-case" scenario for Eli Lilly. And the positive outcomes for both in the Wegovy study can be viewed as encouraging for how Zepbound should perform, the analyst added.

Investors may not be fully pricing in Merck 's strong treatment pipeline, according to UBS. Analyst Trung Huynh expects that "underappreciated pipeline readouts" will be the primary contributor to multiple expansion for the company. Huynh also noted that investors continue to underestimate the value of two key Merck treatments: Keytruda — used in cancer immunotherapy — and Gardasil, a vaccine targeting HPV. The analyst added that these two treatments and other underappreciated catalysts have all contributed to Merck's above-peer growth profile. The upgrade comes after the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Keytruda for treatment with "platinum-containing chemotherapy as neoadjuvant treatment " on Monday.

Hanoi, Vietnam CNN —President Joe Biden will arrive at Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s doorstep on Sunday with a deal in hand to draw yet another one of China’s neighbors closer to the United States. “It’s not going to be easy for Vietnam, because they’re under enormous pressure from China,” the official went on. In Vietnam, it’s not only China whose influence Biden is competing with. On Monday, Biden plans to announce steps to help Vietnam diversify away from an over-reliance on Russian arms, a senior administration official said. “I think that’s a deliberate design by the Biden administration,” said Yun Sun, the China program director at the Stimson Center.

An architecture firm has put a modern twist on the popular Vietnamese "tube house." The five-level residence in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is home to three generations. Pham Trung, the studio's director, told Insider that tube houses are also popular in Vietnam because they can provide more housing for people in its crowded cities. The company designed and constructed the skinny house for a family of six for 554 million Vietnamese dong ($230,000). It took the studio about two months to devise a full concept and complete drawings, and a further five months to construct.

Credit Suisse refreshed its "top of the crop" stock picks for August, betting on some big-name stocks as investors continue to feed the markets with optimism. Credit Suisse recently highlighted several stocks the bank's analysts think can outperform this month. "It is increasingly clear that greater service levels in the form of faster delivery is leading to consumers assigning a higher value to Prime" memberships, Credit Suisse said. Credit Suisse also named electronics manufacturer Flex Ltd. as a top pick. Credit Suisse assigned a $126 price target on Merck, which implies 20% appreciation from Friday's closing price.

Scientists decode an ancient curry recipe

The sandstone slab, buried 2 meters (6.5 feet) below the surface, was dug up in 2018 at the Oc Eo archaeological complex in southern Vietnam. The site was once an overseas trading hub of an ancient Southeast Asian kingdom known as Funan, according to a new study of the substances found on the slab. The findings offer clues to how curry — and the people who made it — migrated to Southeast Asia. “Nowadays, preparing curry in Vietnam has become much simpler for most families due to the widespread availability of curry powder in supermarkets. Nguyen added that the team planned to recreate the 2,000-year-old curry based on the ingredients found at the site.

Wegovy was approved as an obesity treatment in June 2021 , but Ozempic, a Type 2 diabetes treatment, has been used off-label for weight loss. Mounjaro uses GLP-1 and gastric inhibitory polypeptide, or GIP, to help patients lose weight. Eli Lilly's oral drug, orforglipron, has an even better profile . They also could be helpful in assisting patients in maintaining weight loss after they've used the injectable versions, he said. Some have highlighted that oral drugs also may be more manageable for patients who can't handle the idea of giving themselves a once-a-week injection.

Pfizer 's underperformance could be here to stay, Credit Suisse warned. Analyst Trung Huynh downgraded the pharmaceutical stock to neutral from outperform and cut his price target by $7 to $40. Pfizer said it still has other plans for focusing on obesity, which has been a closely followed area in the pharmaceutical development world. Pfizer has been his worst performing call since the outperform rating at the end of November, with shares underperforming major pharmaceutical peers in the U.S. by 26%. He said concerns that have weighed on the stock include over-optimism on Covid vaccination and booster rates, "ambiguous" guidance on the drug pipeline and negative events for projects in the drug pipeline.

Credit Suisse analyst Trung Huynh has combed through social media and is impressed by the awareness — and demand — for GLP-1 medications such as Eli Lilly 's Mounjaro. Among those observations are reports of other potential benefits that patients taking Mounjaro, or tirzepatide, are seeing. Others taking the drug reported benefits such as a reduction in addiction behaviors such as smoking, drinking, gambling and shopping, among other things. However, this may be a function of patients who are trying to use Mounjaro off-label for obesity, he said. Credit Suisse has an outperform rating on Lilly shares, with a $490 price target, which implies more than 9% upside from where Lilly shares closed Wednesday.

Stelara, introduced in 2009, has been J&J’s top-selling drug since 2019, with sales reaching $9.7 billion in 2022. J&J is forecasting $57 billion in pharmaceutical sales by 2025 after reducing its previous view of $60 billion in April, citing currency dynamics that hurt its pharmaceutical business in 2022. That would add around $4.6 billion to average estimates for pharmaceutical sales, as long as no biosimilars enter the market before 2025. Amgen said last month the confidential settlement it signed with J&J will allow it to sell its Stelara biosimilar no later than Jan. 1, 2025. “If no Stelara biosimilars enter in 2024, I think growth should continue at around 4% in 2023 and 2024,” Huynh said.

Lilly manufactures tirzepatide, which is sold under the brand name Mounjaro as a type 2 diabetes treatment. It's the chronic nature of obesity that will make these drugs so profitable, analysts have said. Huynh increased his target due to higher expectations for Mounjaro sales this year. Huynh boosted his prediction for the drug's sales this year to $3.7 billion from an prior estimate of $2.7 billion. "$48 billion is a monster number," Holz said, referring to an annual sales estimate that Bank of America has floated for future Mounjaro sales.

Some analysts were positive about the new settlement that is far bigger than the original offer of $2 billion, as they believe it could bring an end to the lawsuit. J.P. Morgan analyst Chris Schott said in a note the settlement amount was in-line with the brokerage's estimate of $8 billion to $10 billion. "We believe today's announcement should help the IPO of 20% of the consumer unit," Credit Suisse analyst Trung Huynh said in a note. "Overall, we believe the proposed settlement has vast support by the plaintiff supermajority and the top 18 law firms representing the claimants," Jennings said.

The firm said investors still need to be selective in the space, however, naming two top ideas in Merck and AbbVie . Credit Suisse says U.S. pharma as a group is trading at a price-earning ratio of 16 times to 17 times while defensive sectors utilities and consumer staples have 18-20 P-E ratios, on average. For AbbVie, it sees 11% upside from here, noting it has the "highest dividend yield among peers." "As such, we believe large-cap biopharma should remain a solid outperformer in the coming months, with portfolios requiring diversity in the defensive names. If markets rally on further clarity, we see our higher-growth names, such as Eli Lilly, being insulated from the rotation away from defensives and back into growth names."
Tim Cook got the honor of waving the checkered flag at Formula One's United States Grand Prix Sunday. People across the world of F1 were quick to roast for his apparent lack of enthusiasm however. "Possibly the worst checkered flag-waving in Formula One history," one prominent commentator said. Cook became the latest in a long line of well-known figures to signal the end of an F1 race by waving the checkered flag, joining the likes of David Beckham and Serena Williams. Sky Sports commentator Ted Kravitz also chimed in, calling it "possibly the worst checkered flag-waving in Formula One history."
